It is widely accepted that until about the age of seven, learning is the natural consequence of play. Researchers can now use brain imaging to see what is going on. "Neural plasticity (the ability of the brain to reorganise its pathways based on new experience) as a research area has exploded in the past 10 years or so, and that's partly because we have much better technology and we can look at this," says Adelaide University research fellow Dr Julia Pitcher. "I guess the bottom line is there have not been any great revelations but we have much better techniques and much better technology available to look at what's going on."
